Adam Daniel Kinzinger, born February 27, 1978, in Kankakee, Illinois, is a former American politician, political commentator, and retired United States Air Force lieutenant colonel. A Republican, he served as U.S. Representative for Illinois's 16th congressional district from 2011 to 2023. Notable achievements include his military service in Operations Iraqi Freedom and Enduring Freedom, vocal opposition to false 2020 election claims, voting to impeach Donald Trump for incitement of insurrection, and serving on the House Select Committee investigating the January 6, 2021, Capitol attack. He authored the book Renegade: Defending Democracy and Liberty in our Divided Country and now works as a senior political commentator on CNN.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Graduated from Normal West High School; attended college, winning his first election while still enrolled.
  • Military Service: Joined the Air Force, serving in Iraq and Afghanistan; rose to lieutenant colonel in the Air National Guard.
  • Political Career: Elected to Congress in 2010 for Illinois's 11th district; shifted to the 16th after redistricting, defeating incumbent Don Manzullo in the primary. Served on the House Committee on Energy and Commerce and House Foreign Affairs Committee. Announced retirement from Congress in October 2021.
