Al Muratsuchi is a Democratic Assemblymember representing California's 66th Assembly District in the Los Angeles South Bay region, including cities like Torrance, Manhattan Beach, and Redondo Beach. A Japanese-American attorney, educator, and former civil rights lawyer, he first won the seat in 2012, lost it in 2014 to Republican David Hadley, and reclaimed it in 2016, holding it comfortably since with victories like 60.2% in 2024. Notable achievements include chairing the Assembly Education Committee, previously leading the Assembly Budget Subcommittee on Education Funding, and authoring key laws such as AB 247 —a $10 billion TK-12 and community college bond passed as Proposition 2—and AB 2362 for gun safety measures. He also sponsored HR 77 , a legislative apology for Japanese American WWII incarceration, and AB-345 for oil well setbacks near public areas.
Education and Political Experience
Muratsuchi graduated from UC Berkeley and UCLA School of Law. Before the Assembly, he served as deputy California Attorney General, president of the Torrance Unified School District Board of Trustees, and trustee for the Southern California Regional Occupation Center.
