About
Patrick Alan Nunnelee was a Republican politician who represented Mississippi's 1st congressional district in the U.S. House of Representatives from 2011 until his death. A fiscal and social conservative, he was first elected to Congress in 2010, defeating Democrat Travis Childers, and won reelection in 2012 and 2014 unopposed. Prior to Congress, he served in the Mississippi State Senate from 1995 to 2010, representing Lee and Pontotoc counties after replacing Roger Wicker; he chaired the Appropriations Committee and led on tax reform, public health improvements, and agriculture issues. Notable achievements include eliminating the state marriage tax penalty, reforming the Health Department to address public health crises like West Nile and TB, mandating restaurant health grades, enacting "In God We Trust" in classrooms, and earning awards as a Business Champion, Friend of Agriculture , and service to the blind. He died at age 56 from brain cancer complications.
