A United States Air Force veteran and attorney, he previously served six terms in the Texas House from 1981 to 1993 before returning in 2024 after defeating a seven-term incumbent. He resides in McQueeney, Texas, with his wife Joette, and comes from a family with deep Republican roots—his father chaired the Guadalupe County Republican Party, and his mother served on the State Republican Executive Committee and a local school board for 17 years.
