About

Albert Matthew Kookesh, Jr. was an American politician and community leader from Angoon, Alaska. A Democrat, he represented District C in the Alaska State Legislature, serving in the House from 1997 to 2004 and the Senate from 2005 to 2012. He worked as a commercial fisherman and owned/operated a lodge and market. Notable achievements include serving on the Board of Directors for Sealaska Corporation, leadership roles at Kootznoowoo Inc. , co-chair of the Alaska Federation of Natives, and as a Trustee of the Sealaska Heritage Institute Board, where he expanded scholarship programs and supported Southeast Alaska Native cultural revitalization. Earlier, he was Special Assistant for Rural Affairs in the Office of the Governor and held positions in the Alaska Democratic Party.
