Alex Q. Askew

Alex Q. Askew is a Democratic member of the Virginia House of Delegates born in 1985 in Virginia Beach, Virginia. He was raised in Virginia Beach by his mother, a public school teacher, and attended Tallwood High School before pursuing higher education. Askew is an African American Christian who currently represents the 95th District, which includes parts of Norfolk and Virginia Beach.

Education

Askew earned a Bachelor of Arts in History from Hampton University in 2007.

Political Experience

Askew has an extensive background in political work, having spent nearly seven election cycles working on local, state-wide, and national campaigns and projects. He formerly served as Chief of Staff for the Virginia House of Delegates, where he helped craft significant legislation including the nationwide Ashanti Alert , Medicaid expansion, affordable housing expansion, and school safety initiatives.

Askew first ran for office in 2014, seeking the 90th district in a special election but losing in the Democratic primary. He subsequently ran for the 85th district in 2019 and won the general election against Republican Rocky Holcomb with 51.6% of the vote, serving from January 8, 2020 to January 12, 2022. During his first term representing the 85th District, his office had 9 bills signed into law, with 7 receiving unanimous bipartisan support. Notable achievements include expanding workers' compensation coverage for firefighters, implementing lead-water testing processes in all public schools and day cares across Virginia, and creating the first dedicated source of funding for Hampton Roads Transit.

Askew ran unopposed for the 95th district in the 2023 election and assumed office on January 10, 2024. He currently serves as a Community Relations Coordinator for Sentara Health and holds board memberships with the New Leaders Council Virginia and the Democratic Business Alliance of South Hampton Roads. He is an active member of New Jerusalem Ministries, where he mentors and tutors local youth, and graduated from the University of Virginia's Sorensen Institute Political Leaders Program in 2018.
