About

Alice Miller

Alice Miller is a Democratic politician from Shaftsbury in Bennington County, Vermont. Born on March 22, 1939, on Long Island, New York, she became a resident of Shaftsbury in 1964. Miller is a Bennington College graduate and worked in various educational roles before entering public service, including positions as a special education instructor in Shaftsbury, a special education consultant with the Vermont Agency of Education, and with a Head Start program in the Brattleboro area developing education models for low-income students and families.

Political Experience

Miller began her public service on the Shaftsbury Selectboard before being asked by her local Democratic Town Committee to run for the Vermont House of Representatives in 1996. She represented the Bennington-3 district and served 22 years in the Vermont Legislature across 11 terms before retiring after the 2018 election.

Notable Achievements

Miller is recognized as a champion for working Vermonters, children, and families. As a member of the House Education Committee, she was instrumental in developing Act 60—the Equal Education Opportunity Act—a landmark education funding law that reformed school funding across Vermont by basing local school taxes on both property value and income rather than property value alone. Her work has been honored with the inaugural Afterschool Hero Award from Vermont Afterschool, as well as recognition from the Vermont Association for the Education of Young Children and the Sunrise Family Resource Center. She also served on the House Fish and Wildlife and Appropriations committees and served as a Vermont delegate to the New England Board of Higher Education.
