Alvin Holmes

Alvin Adolf Holmes was born on October 26, 1939, in Montgomery, Alabama. He was one of the first African Americans elected to the Alabama Legislature following the civil rights era and became a prominent figure in state politics. Holmes died on November 21, 2020, at the age of 81.

Political Experience

Holmes served in the Alabama House of Representatives representing House District 78 from 1974 to 2018, making him the longest-serving member of the Alabama House during his tenure. Throughout his 44 years in the legislature, he became known for his distinctive communication style, blending humor with incendiary remarks during floor debates.

Among his notable achievements, Holmes filed the 1992 lawsuit that successfully removed the Confederate battle flag from the Alabama Capitol's dome. His political career ended in 2018 when he was defeated in a Democratic primary runoff.
