Biography

Ami Bera, M.D., born on March 2, 1965, in Los Angeles, California, is an American physician and politician serving as the U.S. Representative for California's 6th Congressional District since 2023. Prior to redistricting, he represented the 7th District from 2013 to 2023. A member of the Democratic Party, Bera is the longest-serving Indian American in Congress. He resides in Elk Grove, California, with his wife, Janine, also a physician, and their daughter, Sydra.

Education and Political Experience

Education:
- Bachelor of Science in Biological Sciences from the University of California, Irvine
- Doctor of Medicine from the University of California, Irvine, 1991
Medical Career:
- Practiced internal medicine in the Sacramento area
- Served as Chief Medical Officer for Sacramento County
- Associate Dean for Admissions and Outreach at the UC Davis School of Medicine
Political Experience:
- Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2012, representing California's 7th District
- Re-elected in subsequent terms; currently represents the 6th District
