Amy Jean Klobuchar was born on May 25, 1960, in Plymouth, Minnesota. She is the daughter of Jim Klobuchar, a columnist for the Star Tribune, and Rose Klobuchar, an elementary school teacher. Klobuchar was the valedictorian of her class at Wayzata High School.

In 1993, she married John Bessler, a private practice attorney and professor at the University of Baltimore School of Law. They have one daughter, Abigail.
