Amy Nielsen

Amy Nielsen is a Democratic member of the Iowa House of Representatives representing the 85th district since January 2017. She was born in 1977 in Keokuk and currently resides in North Liberty with her husband Jason and three children—two daughters and one son.

Prior to her election to the state House, Nielsen served as Mayor of North Liberty from November 2014 to December 2016, winning the mayoral election in 2014 with 55.11% of the vote.

Education

Nielsen graduated from Iowa City West High School and attended Kirkwood Community College.

Political Experience

Nielsen is currently serving her fifth term in the Iowa House, representing House District 85, which encompasses the cities of North Liberty, Tiffin, Oxford, Swisher, Shueyville, and Lone Tree, along with rural areas surrounding Iowa City to the west and south.

She has been active in her community through various roles, including former membership on the North Liberty Community Pantry Board of Directors, the Iowa City Blue Zones Project, and the Iowa City Community School District CEDAC and Equity Advisory committees. In 2016, she earned the Iowa League of Cities Certified Elected Municipal Official designation.

Currently, Nielsen serves as state director for the National Foundation for Women Legislators. She previously served as Assistant Democratic Leader from 2021 to 2024.
