Bernie Sanders, born on September 8, 1941, in Brooklyn, New York, is an American politician and activist serving as the junior United States Senator from Vermont. A self-described democratic socialist, Sanders has been a prominent advocate for progressive policies, including income equality, universal healthcare, and labor rights. He began his political career as the mayor of Burlington, Vermont, in 1981, a position he held until 1989. In 1990, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving until 2007, when he transitioned to the U.S. Senate. Sanders has been reelected to the Senate multiple times, most recently in 2024.
