Christine P. Barber is a Democratic member of the Massachusetts House of Representatives, representing the 34th Middlesex District, which includes neighborhoods in Somerville and Medford. A resident of Somerville, she was first elected in 2015 and sworn in January 2015, becoming the first woman to represent the district. Now in her sixth term, she is known for her progressive priorities, including affordable housing, immigrant justice, disability rights, early childhood education, affordable health care, women’s rights, climate change action, and public transportation access.

Education and Political Experience

Barber previously worked as a health care policy analyst for eight years at Community Catalyst, a national health care advocacy organization, where she led campaigns to enact the Affordable Care Act, expand health coverage enrollment, and ensure insurance for transgender individuals. She is a former member of the Somerville Democratic Committee.

Notable positions and achievements include serving as Chair of the Joint Committee on Environment and Natural Resources, Co-Chair of the Massachusetts Caucus of Women Legislators, member of the Massachusetts Autism Commission and Early Education Workforce Council, and Co-Chair of the Task Force on Justice-Involved Women and the Progressive Caucus.
