Gregg Hart is a Democrat representing California's 37th Assembly District, which includes Santa Barbara County and southern San Luis Obispo County. Elected in November 2022, he assumed office on December 5, 2022, after defeating Republican Mike Stoker. A lifelong Santa Barbara resident with over 30 years of public service, Hart has served as a Planning Commissioner, Santa Barbara City Council member, California Coastal Commissioner, and Santa Barbara County Supervisor for the 2nd District. He is a member of the California Legislative Progressive Caucus and chairs the Subcommittee No. 7 on Accountability and Oversight, while serving on committees including Water, Parks, and Wildlife; Transportation; Appropriations; Budget; Utilities and Energy; and several select committees on climate, sea level rise, nonprofits, and more. Notable achievements include authoring bills to accelerate disaster recovery, maintain local government operations during crises, and strengthen enforcement against oil companies after spills.

Education and Political Experience

  • Education: Attended local public schools in Santa Barbara; graduated from Santa Barbara City College and the University of California, Santa Barbara .
  • Early Career: Began as a Legislative Assistant for former Assemblymember Jack O'Connell; managed SBCAG’s Traffic Solutions program promoting sustainable transport; served as Deputy Executive Director for SBCAG, advancing freeway widening and rail/bus improvements; owned and operated Transitions Preschool, a family childcare business, for over 20 years.
  • Political Experience: Inspired by his parents—a school teacher mother and library director father—Hart's service focuses on education, poverty reduction, emergency preparedness, health, equity, criminal justice reform, environmental protection, economic opportunity, homelessness, and housing. In the 2022-2026 session, he initiated 33 bills, with 4 passed.
