About

Jessica González-Rojas is a Democratic and Working Families Party member representing New York State Assembly District 34, which encompasses the diverse Queens communities of Astoria, Corona, East Elmhurst, Elmhurst, Jackson Heights, and Woodside. Elected in 2020 and assuming office in 2021, she is a progressive advocate focused on abortion justice, immigrant rights, racial justice, LGBTQ+ liberation, health care access, labor power, and gender equity. Notable achievements include sponsoring the Universal School Meals Act, securing $145 million to expand free breakfast and lunch to 86% of students; establishing the Reproductive Freedom and Equity Fund with $25 million in the 2024 budget for abortion providers; and passing legislation with $8 million for continuous health care coverage for children aged birth to 6 in Medicaid or CHIP. She has also advanced maternal health, transgender rights, transportation access, gun violence prevention, worker protections, and healthcare transparency.

Education and Political Experience

Prior to her Assembly role, González-Rojas served 13 years in leadership at the National Latina Institute for Reproductive Justice, building Latina power for health, dignity, and justice. She held positions on the Board of Directors for New Immigrant Community Empowerment for 12 years, as Queens rider advocate for the New York City Transit Riders Council for eight years, and as Vice Chair of the National Hispanic Leadership Agenda, co-chairing its Health Committee and Latina Task Force. Earlier, she was a community liaison for Congresswoman Nydia M. Velázquez via NALEO and served on the New York State Committee from 2002 to 2006. Her experience spans early childhood education, higher education, disability rights, veterans’ health, racial justice, and community organizing, with recognitions from the New York State Senate, Assembly, NYC Comptroller, and City Council. She currently serves on the Assembly Committee on Children and Families.
