Joseph David Courtney, born on April 6, 1953, in Hartford, Connecticut, is an American lawyer and politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Connecticut's 2nd congressional district since 2007. A member of the Democratic Party, he represents a district encompassing most of the eastern third of the state, including Norwich and New London. Prior to his tenure in Congress, Courtney served in the Connecticut House of Representatives from 1987 to 1994, representing the 56th district. He has been recognized for his bipartisan efforts, earning accolades such as the Connecticut National Guard's Meritorious Service Award and being named Legislator of the Year by the Veterans of Foreign Wars in 2009.
