Biography

John Thune, born on January 7, 1961, in Pierre, South Dakota, is a prominent American politician serving as the senior United States Senator from South Dakota. Raised in Murdo, South Dakota, Thune's early interest in politics was sparked during his high school years. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in business from Biola University and later obtained a Master of Business Administration from the University of South Dakota. Thune's political career began as a legislative aide to U.S. Senator Jim Abdnor, followed by roles at the Small Business Administration and as executive director of the South Dakota Republican Party. In 1996, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, serving three terms before honoring his pledge to limit his tenure. In 2004, Thune made history by defeating incumbent Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, marking the first time in 52 years that a sitting Senate party leader was unseated. He has since been re-elected multiple times, including an unopposed race in 2010. In 2024, Thune was elected Senate Majority Leader, succeeding Mitch McConnell. ,
