Senator Josh Becker ** represents California's **13th Senate District, which includes most of San Mateo County and northern Santa Clara County, such as Menlo Park, Palo Alto, Redwood City, and Sunnyvale. Elected in November 2020, he is a public policy innovator at the intersection of community activism, technology, and social justice, with notable leadership in transitioning California to 100% clean energy and net zero emissions, voter access, justice reforms, and economic mobility through technology.
He chairs the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Water, Senate Committee on Human Services, and Select Committee on Economic Development and Innovation; he also serves on committees for Energy, Utilities and Communications; Insurance; Transportation; and the Joint Legislative Audit Committee. Becker founded Full Circle in 2000, funding Bay Area nonprofits in economic opportunity, education, environmental sustainability, and health; co-founded New Cycle Capital ; launched a biotech firm after his father's death from brain cancer; and served as CEO of Lex Machina and founding trustee of UC Merced. A 20-year Menlo Park resident, he lives with his wife Jonna, sons Leo and Aaron, and dog Percy.
Education and Political Experience
- Education: Earned a JD/MBA from Stanford University in 1999; co-founded the Stanford Board Fellows program to train students for nonprofit boards.
- Political Experience: Appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to the California State Workforce Development Board and served on San Mateo County's Child Care Partnership Council; early service included work with refugees in Guatemala and El Salvador in the 1990s. In office since 2020, he initiated 37 bills in one session .
