Senator Lauren Kuby
Lauren Kuby is an Arizona State Senator representing Legislative District 8 as a Democrat. She was elected to the State Senate in 2024 and brings extensive local governance experience to the state legislature. Kuby is recognized as a national champion for climate action and collaborative governance. Her advocacy work has earned her Progress Arizona's "Rookie of the Year" award and the second-highest score in the Legislature. She is also one of two State Senators recognized as an "Environmental Champion" by the Sierra Club Grand Canyon Chapter.
Legislative District 8 encompasses Tempe, Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, Scottsdale, Phoenix, and Mesa.
Education and Professional Background
Kuby holds a position as an ASU Global Futures Scientist, reflecting her commitment to environmental and policy research. Her professional background demonstrates a long-standing dedication to advocacy across multiple sectors.
Political Experience
Before her election to the State Senate, Kuby served as a Tempe councilmember and vice mayor, where she led efforts on social, economic, environmental, and racial justice initiatives. Her local accomplishments include work on climate action, affordable housing, equal pay, earned sick days, animal welfare, urban forestry, transparency, and campaign-finance reform. Notably, she spearheaded a dark-money ballot initiative that garnered 91.44% support from Tempe voters, and her efforts exposing the corruptive influence of money in politics were featured in the inaugural episode of the MSNBC docuseries American Swamp.
In the State Senate, Kuby serves as ranking member of the Senate Government Committee and serves on the Judiciary/Elections and Appropriations committees. She also represents Senate Democrats on the Water Infrastructure Finance Authority. Her current policy priorities include climate solutions, public education, affordable housing, voting rights, and LGBTQ+ and worker protections.
