Mike Carey

Michael Todd Whitaker Carey was born on March 13, 1971, in Sabina, Ohio, a small town in rural Ohio where he was raised on a family farm. He credits his upbringing with instilling in him the values of hard work, community, and freedom. Carey is a husband and father of three who currently resides in Columbus. He identifies as a practicing Catholic and is an avid supporter of history, music, and Ohio State University athletics.

Before entering Congress, Carey spent more than two decades as an advocate for coal miners and American energy independence. He served as vice president of government affairs for American Consolidated Natural Resources , a coal company, and as chairman of the board of the Ohio Coal Association. Throughout his career in the energy sector, he worked to protect American jobs, save miners' pension benefits, and reverse overreaching government regulations.

Education

Carey earned an Associate of Science degree in Economics from Marion Military Institute and a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from The Ohio State University. He also obtained an ROTC scholarship and followed his family's tradition of military service.

Political Experience

Carey is a Republican who represents Ohio's 15th Congressional District, which includes Madison County and parts of Clark, Fayette, Franklin, Miami, and Shelby counties. He was first elected in a special election on November 2, 2021, and was sworn into the U.S. House of Representatives on November 4, 2021. He received endorsements from former President Donald Trump and former Vice President Mike Pence during his campaign.

In Congress, Carey serves on the House Ways and Means Committee and the Committee on House Administration. He also holds the positions of Deputy Whip and NRCC Co-Chair. Additionally, he co-chairs the Congressional Humanities Caucus. Prior to his election to Congress, he developed campaign advertising during the 2004 and 2008 presidential elections.
