Mike Fong is a Democrat representing California's 49th Assembly District, which includes cities such as Alhambra, Arcadia, El Monte, Monterey Park, Rosemead, San Gabriel, San Marino, South Pasadena, and Temple City, along with unincorporated areas like South San Gabriel, North El Monte, and East Pasadena. Elected in a special election in February 2022 to replace Ed Chau, he has served since then and won re-election in 2024 with 62% of the vote. Notable achievements include authoring over two dozen bills signed into law or incorporated into the state budget, securing $35 million for local parks and community projects, and advocating for gun control following the Monterey Park mass shooting. He chairs the Assembly Higher Education Committee and the Asian American & Pacific Islander Legislative Caucus, and serves on committees including Appropriations, Banking and Finance, Budget, and Governmental Organization.
Education and Political Experience
Mike Fong holds a bachelor’s degree in psychobiology from UCLA and a master’s degree in public administration from California State University, Northridge. Before the Assembly, he served as a Trustee for the Los Angeles Community College District, where he expanded career pathways, workforce training, and access to higher education for over 250,000 students. His prior roles include Director of Policy and Government Relations for the Los Angeles Department of Neighborhood Empowerment, East Area Director for Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Field Deputy for Councilmember Ed Reyes. He has also been a Commissioner in Alhambra, served on boards for Goodwill Southern California and LA’s BEST, and chaired the California Democratic Party Asian Pacific Islander Caucus.
