About

Ron Wyden is a Democratic U.S. Senator representing the state of Oregon, serving since 1996 after previously representing Oregon's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives from 1981 to 1996. Born on May 3, 1949, in Wichita, Kansas, he is known for principled bipartisanship on issues like healthcare, consumer protection, environmental regulation, tax reform, and civil liberties, including advocacy for the elderly, open internet, and opposition to government overreach. Notable achievements include chairing the Senate Finance Committee in 2023, authoring over 150 bipartisan bills, blocking efforts to overturn Oregon's Death with Dignity law, and advancing legislation like the National Prescribed Fire Act in 2024 to reduce wildfire risks. He holds annual town halls in all 36 Oregon counties and was reelected in 2016 and 2022.

Education

Wyden attended the University of California-Santa Barbara on a basketball scholarship, transferred to Stanford University where he earned a bachelor's degree with distinction, and received his J.D. from the University of Oregon School of Law in 1974.

Political Experience

Before elected office, Wyden co-founded the Oregon Gray Panthers , directed Oregon Legal Services for the Elderly , taught gerontology, and served on the Oregon State Board of Examiners of Nursing Home Administrators. Elected to the House in 1980, he built a record as a moderate to liberal Democrat supporting party leadership while cosponsoring bipartisan measures on health, infrastructure, and natural resources. In the Senate, he has focused on Medicare funding, medical marijuana legalization, cancer issues after his 2010 prostate cancer treatment, kinship care reforms, reducing benzene in gasoline, and the "Stand By Your Ad" law for campaign transparency. He resides in Portland with his wife Nancy and has five children.
