Biography

Steve Scalise is an American politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Louisiana's 1st congressional district since 2008. A member of the Republican Party, he has held several leadership positions, including House Majority Whip , House Minority Whip , and House Majority Leader . Born on October 6, 1965, in New Orleans, Louisiana, Scalise graduated from Louisiana State University with a degree in Computer Science and a minor in Political Science. He is married to Jennifer, and they have two children, Madison and Harrison.

Scalise has been a steadfast advocate for Louisiana's interests, notably leading efforts to pass the RESTORE Act in 2012, which dedicated the majority of Clean Water Act fines from the Deepwater Horizon oil spill to coastal restoration. He has also been a strong supporter of energy revenue sharing, ensuring Louisiana's access to funds dedicated to restoring its coast.

In 2017, Scalise was critically wounded during a Congressional baseball practice but made a remarkable recovery, returning to Congress and inspiring many with his resilience.

In August 2023, Scalise announced he had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, a type of blood cancer. He began treatment and reported that his recovery was progressing well.

In October 2023, Scalise was nominated by House Republicans to succeed Kevin McCarthy as Speaker of the House. However, he withdrew from the race after failing to secure the necessary support from his colleagues.
