Jeffrey Alan Merkley, born on October 24, 1956, in Myrtle Creek, Oregon, is a Democratic politician serving as the junior United States Senator from Oregon since 2009. Prior to his tenure in the Senate, Merkley represented the 47th district in the Oregon House of Representatives from 1999 to 2009, serving as Speaker of the House from 2007 to 2009.
