Biography

Julie Elizabeth Johnson, born on May 2, 1966, in Kansas City, Kansas, is a Democratic politician serving as the U.S. Representative for Texas's 32nd Congressional District since January 3, 2025. She is the first openly LGBTQ+ member of Congress from Texas and the first woman to represent District 32.

Prior to her congressional tenure, Johnson served three terms in the Texas House of Representatives, representing District 115 from 2019 to 2025. During her time in the state legislature, she was recognized for her bipartisan efforts, passing 108 bills focused on patient protection and insurance reform. Notably, she authored the first bipartisan Medicaid expansion bill in Texas history.

In 2019, Johnson was named "Freshman of the Year" by Texas Monthly, honored as a "Champion of Medicine" by the Texas Medical Association, and received the "Big Voices for Little Texans" Award from Texas CASA.

Johnson resides in Farmers Branch, Texas, with her wife, Susan Moster, and their two sons, Nicholas and Ben.

Political Experience

  • Texas House of Representatives :

    • Represented District 115.
    • Served on the House Committee on Insurance and the House Committee on Judiciary & Civil Jurisprudence, where she was Vice Chair.
    • Co-founded the Texas House LGBTQ Caucus.
    • Authored and passed numerous bipartisan bills, including the "Live Well Texas" bill aimed at expanding Medicaid.
  • U.S. House of Representatives :

    • Elected to represent Texas's 32nd Congressional District in November 2024, succeeding Colin Allred.
    • Serves on the U.S. Committee on House Administration and the Committee on Homeland Security, where she is Vice Ranking Member.
    • Focuses on consumer protection, healthcare access, and equality issues.

Throughout her career, Johnson has been a steadfast advocate for LGBTQ+ rights, healthcare reform, and bipartisan collaboration to address pressing issues facing her constituents.
