Biography

Gregory Francis Murphy, born on March 5, 1963, in Raleigh, North Carolina, is a Republican politician and practicing urologist representing North Carolina's 3rd Congressional District in the U.S. House of Representatives. He has served in this role since September 15, 2019, succeeding the late Congressman Walter B. Jones Jr. Prior to his congressional tenure, Murphy served in the North Carolina House of Representatives from 2015 to 2019. He is the only actively practicing physician in Congress, continuing to see patients a few days each month.

Education

  • Bachelor of Science in Pre-Medical Studies, Religion, and Economics from Davidson College, graduated magna cum laude in 1985.
  • Doctor of Medicine from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, graduated with honors in 1989.

Political Experience

  • North Carolina House of Representatives: Appointed in 2015 to represent the 9th District; elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2018.
    • Served as Senior Chair of Health Policy and Chair of Health and Human Services Appropriations.
    • Primary sponsor of the STOP Act and the HOPE Act, key legislative initiatives addressing the opioid crisis in North Carolina.
  • U.S. House of Representatives: Elected in a 2019 special election to represent North Carolina's 3rd Congressional District; re-elected in 2020 and 2024.
